I love zoos. I visited the Portland Zoo with my son this summer. It was wonderful. Recently my daughter and a visiting Australian student took a quick spin around the Central Park Zoo. Unfortunately, it was a warmish day (for December) and the polar bears were simply sleeping. Usually, they are relentless swimmers and watching them paddle around their tank (which you can do from under the water) is endlessly fascinating (at least for me). So it should come as no surprise that a recent commercial for the Pittsburgh Zoo caught my attention. You can watch the spot on Media Post.I thought it was pretty funny. More importantly, I hope Pittsburgers find it funny enough to visit and support their Zoo. Zoos do a surprising amount of good for animals, especially in the areas of animal research and sustaining endangered species. The Wildlife Conservation Society (which manages the Central Park and Bronx Zoo’s among others) is a leader in this area and is credited with saving the buffalo among other species. This is warm and fuzzy stuff.
